About Blackberry Passport – Review and Specs

Blackberry Passport hands on

As a fan of Blackberry smartphones, you will either love the Blackberry Passport or be disappointed by it because it is something different from what’s available in smartphones. It is a brave, imaginative device that challenges how a smartphone should look and work. With Passport, Blackberry challenges the status quo and offers buyers something almost totally different than what they’re used to but that is hopefully better.

More and more smartphone users are demanding for large screen and that include Blackberry users. To carter for these group in the past, Blackberry built bigger screen phones and they did this by removing every signature of Blackberry from the phones such as the QWERTY keyboard, control buttons and even comfort. Examples of such Blackberry phones include z10 with screen size of 4.2 inches and Z3 with screen size of 5.0 inches.

With Passport however Blackberry offered customers who want bigger screen exactly that but still leaving on their most identifying signature feature, the physical QWERTY keyboard.

Blackberry Passport has a square 1:1 screen under it is a three-line physical QWERTY keyboard. The makes the phone wide and squat only slightly wider than an actual passport. It fits well in a jacket pocket if you don’t mind the weight.

But it definitely isn’t meant to be carried by hand or in a trouser pocket since it won’t fit. And that’s okay because the group this screen size was designed for are people who like phablets and hence don’t mind that it won’t fit in the hand or trouser pocket.

As you’d expect from a phone of its price range, the Blackberry Passport is well constructed with high quality material. You can tell from just looking at the phone that it is a premium device. The front face of the phone is all shiny glass and the rear is a soft-touch of plastic and curved perfectly to create the thickness of the phone.

The Blackberry 10 OS that it runs on is completely controlled by on-screen gestures so navigation buttons isn’t necessary to have on the phone. There are still volume buttons on the side as with most Blackberry phones and a voice command feature between them.

As you may have noticed the keyboard isn’t the standard Blackberry physical QWERTY keyboard with four rows. Instead the physical QWERTY keyboard on Passport is 3 rows. The fourth one is visible on screen. And it can be expanded to show more rows as you type. The keyboard design is unique to Blackberry. And you’ll agree it’s a brilliant idea. It combines the best of both worlds in a slick manner.

As with any change the keyboard layout might take some getting used to because some keys have been moved around. You will definitely feel the absence of the fourth physical keyboard. And because of where the keyboard is located typing isn’t as comfortable as it is with other Blackberry smartphones physical QWERTY keyboard. You’ll notice in the picture below that the user is holding the phone awkwardly to type. But as with everything else, eventually a user gets used to the keyboard and typing becomes more comfortable. The keyboard is there for those who aren’t able to get used to typing on a touch-screen.

Blackberry Passport is 4.5 inches in size with a resolution of 1440 x 1440 pixels and 453ppi.

There wasn’t any much difference in Blackberry specs after its flagship level models, the z10 and Q10. Blackberry Passport changed that. It runs on the latest version of Blackberry 10 OS. The OS look and feel was spruced up. Blackberry Hub was improved on. Has a built in Amazon app store so you can access Apps easily.

Blackberry Passport performance is quick and responsive and the screen is bright and sharp. It runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 with four cores running at 2.26 GHz. It is packed with 3GB RAM and 32 GB of storage space that is expandable up to 128GB with a microSD card.

Videos play well enough on BB Passport even though being a square screen you don’t get the best experience. Call quality is perfect.

Blackberry Passport comes with a 13 MP primary camera and 2MP front camera. The camera gives a great performance even in low lights. It comes with a handful of features for optimization. The only issue you may have with it is that photos are set by default to a capture of 1:1. Viewed on the square screen it looks nice but outside the screen you likely won’t like it.

Passport is powered by 3450mAh battery. And its performance is very impressive. It lasts up to two days with moderate to heavy usage.

I think it is right to say that for all the premium device offers, it is worth the price. If you think it is too expensive then it likely wasn’t built for you.

Blackberry Passport is positioned as a hardcore productivity device for high end customers. With Blackberry Passport, Blackberry targeted working professionals with specific needs, the group that needs a smartphone for more than just constantly being in touch, like Doctors, Architects and Lawyers. Unlike Z3 and Z10 Blackberry made a good effort with the Passport to stand out of the crowd from Android phones.

You can tell that a lot of smart thinking went into building the device. And the idea is commendable coming from a company that has been down for awhile.

With a price as low as ₦101,020, Jumia seem the best place to buy Blackberry Passport.
